See What Your God Has Done [Devotion]

I had originally sat down to write a devotion inspired by the life and faith of Patrick of Ireland (one of my heroes). But as I did the song I was listening to pulled my heart in another direction. Give it a listen.

I know this is a Christmas song but its theme is one for every season and, I’ll be honest, it almost always brings me to the verge of tears. The simplicity of this message reminds me in the midst of all that comes with life it is all eclipsed by what God has done. It puts me in mind of Matthew 11:28-30 where Jesus says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

No matter the trials, no matter the pain, no matter the confusion, no matter the distractions we can, in the words of the old hymn, “turn our eyes upon Jesus… and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.”

Come and see what your God has done!  And though He has done many things the great thing to which we refer is this, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21). There is no greater thing that could be done for us and it has already been done.

So in your confusion, disenchantment, struggle, bitterness, brokenness, hopeless turn and look on the certainty of what God has done. If you have received this gift through faith then cling to it. If you have not then, in repentance before God, cry out for it! In the work of Jesus there is immeasurable hope, healing, peace, victory, purpose, and faith.

So come, see what He has done, and hope in Him alone.
